Complete Beginner's Guide to Clay Shooting

Everything you need to know to get started safely and confidently in clay target shooting.

Safety First - Non-Negotiable Rules

Before anything else, these safety rules must be understood and followed at all times.

  • Treat every firearm as if it's loaded
  • Never point the muzzle at anything you don't intend to destroy
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot
  • Be sure of your target and what's beyond it
  • Wear appropriate eye and ear protection at all times
  • Only load your gun when you're on the firing line
  • Keep the action open when not shooting

Remember: Safety is everyone's responsibility. If you see something unsafe, speak up immediately.

Basic Shooting Technique

The fundamentals that every clay shooter needs to master.

1. Stance and Grip

  • • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, weight slightly forward
  • • Point your leading foot toward where you expect to break the target
  • • Grip the gun firmly but not tightly - think "firm handshake"
  • • Keep both eyes open to maintain depth perception

2. Gun Mount

  • • Bring the gun up to your face, don't drop your head to the gun
  • • The comb should sit snugly against your cheek
  • • Your master eye should line up naturally with the rib
  • • Practice mounting at home (with an unloaded gun) until it's automatic

3. Swing and Follow Through

  • • Start with the gun pointing behind the target's flight path
  • • Swing smoothly through the target, matching its speed
  • • Pull the trigger while moving - never stop the gun
  • • Continue the swing after the shot (follow through)
